Did not have as much sleep the last few nights as I'd ideally wanted to. Had about 5 hours sleep for the past two nights and by the third morning, I was pretty 'zonked'.
Ever wondered how long you can go on without sleeping, and what happens after that?
Apparently, the record is 264 hours (equivalent to 11 days!) Shocking? But possible it seems. This was proven by a 17 year old Randy Gardiner from California who performed his feat at a local sience fair in 1966. He was zombie-like by the end of it, but made a full recovery after three nights' rest.
Reader Digest reports : ' Randy was lucky! Staying awake for more than 100 hours is all but impossible. Not only do you have to remain upright and be constantly stimulated ie. hard core 'pinching'. Mc's thoughts : (probably slapping your face every 30 seconds too).
Effects : You're likely to become disoriented, paranoid and start seeing things, AND experts think long-term psychological damage may occur.
Lesson learnt : Always sleep, even if it means not having to complete your work or having a deadline to deal with!
