'Sien' or 'so sien lar' are examples of terms we Malaysians often refer to describe ourselves feeling 'bored'. The singaporeans do use this term from time to time. Even the Hongkies are fast adapting to our usage of Malaysianised-words. If I remember correctly, my Malay friends use them too, or at least, they'd understand what we meant when we use those words in our daily conversations.
Coincidentally, part of my friend's name is Sian. So, she is used to referring to herself as Sian. One day, Sian decides to call Light & Radio for the Michael Buble 'Win tickets to watch his Concert' Contest. And the conversation exchanged between them... ( ps: By then, Siann was feeling pretty hyped up, nervous, anxious, you name it .. )
DJ : So, we have a caller here from PJ, her name's Siannn.
Sian : Hi?
DJ : So Siannn, does the name mean anything to you?
Sian : NO.
DJ (obviously not a chinese) : Hmmm, really? My chinese friends told me 'Sian' means like bored or something.
Sian : urm,... (pause) ... (thinks)... ahahahahahaha, YA.
DJ : ...(pauses).... Alrightey then! So erm, our first question for you Sian, what does Michael Buble's father use to work as?
Sian : Errmmmm,.. (biting her lips already)... (about to black out!)
DJ : Ok, how about a little help,.. when you see the sea, what do you see?
Sian (bravely and confidently): .. (^-^)... FISHMONGER!
DJ : ... hmm, close close,...
Sian (secretly thinking to herself : "Fishmonger? What was I thinking??") : Fisherman!
*Applause for Siann for her courage. Needless to say, after 2 other questions, Siannn bagged her free Michael Buble CD and stands a chance to see him perform live in Sydney!
When asked to use ONE word to describe MB, she said "Irresistable!" Great choice!
Personally, I would probably never ever call up a Radio station! Not that I'd ever get through the phone to begin with!
