Today, out of absolute necessity, I was left alone to handle all the OKTs ("Orang Kena Tuduh") in one court. Usually, we'd be lucky to have an assistant, but today, there just wasn't enough people to go around. We had afterall, only 3 people with locus. But I'm happy for even though I am dead tired by the end of mitigation, out of the 6 people I mitigated for, 2 had already served their 3 month imprisonment and were free to go. Yaye!! Sure I was happy for them, but they were doing drugs! And as I thought to myself, it would probably have felt better if I thought 3 months was enough for them. I mean, I had done my best in mitigation, but is 3 months really sufficient to punish them? One guy was arrested for possessing 10 tubes (clearly, and he admitted it was for the purpose of selling them) and another had 2 tubes (personal consumption). At the end of the day, the one with 10 tubes got away with 4 months, leaving only one month left in prison. The other one was sentenced to 3 months, and since he had been in prison since November, he was free to go.
Sometimes I can't help but wonder what the true purpose is for being there.
